
Dr.-Ing. Dennis Kundrat

Dr.-Ing. Dennis Kundrat is currently the head of the Department Therapy at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Individualized and Cell-Based Medical Engineering (IMTE) in Lübeck, Germany. His primary research interest lies in assistive mechatronic technologies, surgical robotics, skill assessment, and AI-driven autonomy.
Previously, Dennis has held the position of a senior researcher in Medical Robotics at the Robotics and Mechatronics (RaM) Lab, University of Twente, The Netherlands. Between 2018 and 2020, he was a Research Associate at the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, Imperial College London, UK. In this role, he made significant strides in developing novel MR-compatible robotic devices for endovascular interventions.
His pioneering research, published in esteemed journals such as IEEE TBME and Science Robotics, has earned him the Best Robotic Design Award at the UK-RAS Surgical Robot Challenge in 2019.
Dennis holds a diploma and a doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing.) from Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany. His dissertation presented an innovative robotic endoscope for non-contact laser surgery, reflecting his focus on interdisciplinary research.
Between 2013 and 2016, Dennis served as a visiting researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology and Femto-St, France, contributing to the EU project µRALP.
His passion lies in developing highly innovative, individualized mechatronic platforms that blend robotics, navigation, and visual control. By tailoring these platforms to clinical needs, he aims to enhance clinical routines and patient care.
